Simon Hancock, practice manager at Huon Vally Health Centre in Huonville and Cygnet, was recently awarded the Tasmanian Practice Manager of the Year award at a gala awards dinner in Hobart.
Each year, practice managers and nomiated by their peers, and a committee is organised through the Australian Associated of Practice Management (AAPM) at its head office in Melbourne, which sifts through nominations and selects who they believe has excelled in practice management.
“I was quite shocked, as I was not expecting the receive this award,” said Simon.
“There were great Practice Managers nominated from around the state, who have achieved a lot for their practice, their community and AAPM.
“I believe I was selected due to my commitment to, not only our partients, but to the community, in trying to provide more services, as well as my willingness to support and mentor other practice managers through AAPM.”
Simon said that the support of the practice principals, Dr Alexandra Seidel, Dr Bastien Seidel and Dr Rebecca Grant was invaluable to him as practice manager.
“The trust and confidence they instill in me, along with the support from all the staff and doctors at the practice, makes my job much easier,” he said.
“It has been a very busy 12 months at Huon Valley Health Centre, with taking over the council practice in George Street Cygnet, as well as the opening of the Mary Street Clinic in Cygnet two weeks ago, which is dedicated a Allied Health Centre.
“When I started three and a half years ago, there was only 13 of us at the Practice in Huonville.
“Now we employ almost 40 staff, who work across three centres,” he said.
Simon will head off to Perth, Western Australia at the end of October to attend the award ceremony to announce the National Practice Manager of the Year.
The Huon Valley Health Centre wished Simon good luck in Perth, and said that they hope to see him come back with the national award.
