Introducing Intern Dr Sara McKenzie

The Huon Valley Health Centre has partnered with Ochre Health to deliver the Tasmanian Intern Program. Intern doctors are newly graduated doctors who complete the majority of their intern year in a hospital environment. This is the second year that general practice has been included as a rotation in Tasmania, with support from the Australian Government’s Rural Junior Doctor Training Innovation Fund.

We hosted Dr Emma Tan in the first quarter of the year and she was instrumental in assisting our community during the bushfires. Dr Sara McKenzie commenced her placement with us on 14th April. More about Sara below:

My name is Sara McKenzie, I am an intern currently commencing at the Huon Valley Health Centre. Throughout my medical degree I have always enjoyed my general practice rotations the most.

I’ve been lucky enough to have had most of my previous GP rotations in the Huon Valley. I love the beautiful greenness of the area and the friendliness of the people.

Originally from Canada, I travelled to Australia over 10 years ago on a working holiday as a registered nurse and was placed in Hobart, where I was fortunate enough to meet my husband. I’ve had the opportunity to work in many areas of nursing, whilst working at a remote nursing post in Western Australia I realised how much more I needed to and wanted to learn – so I decided to pursue a career in medicine and haven’t looked back!

Through the course of my medical degree I have had two children and although we are a busy little family, when we have free time we enjoy bushwalking, camping and going to our local beach with our dog Murphy.
