Introducing Intern Dr Samantha Gibson-Smith

The Huon Valley Health Centre has partnered with Ochre Health to deliver the Tasmanian Intern Program. Intern doctors are newly graduated doctors who complete the majority of their intern year in a hospital environment. This is the first year that general practice has been included as a rotation in Tasmania, with support from the Australian Government’s Rural Junior Doctor Training Innovation Fund.

We have just said goodbye to Dr Zoe Dodge after 13 weeks, and now welcome Dr Sam Gibson-Smith. More about Sam below:

Tasmanian born and bred Dr Samantha Gibson-Smith fancied the idea of studying medicine ever since she was young, but it wasn’t until a close family member fell ill that she knew she “wanted to do something challenging”.

Completing her Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Tasmania last year, Samantha is looking forward to heading down the path of a rural general practice career.

Samantha is excited to complete her thirteen-week internship placement in the picturesque Huon Valley: “I’m excited about the different lifestyle that Huon Valley has to offer, compared to my home city of Hobart. I’m looking forward to developing my skill set in a rural setting.”

Samantha lists bushwalking, horse riding, and taking her dog to the beach as a few of her favourite pastimes, and is looking forward to meeting and learning from the team at the Huon Valley Health Centre.
