Bone Density Scanning

Osteoporosis can impact anyone

As part of our ongoing commitment to patient care, we have arranged for a specialist bone density scanning service to visit Woolworths carpark in Huonville from the 3rd – 7th June 2019. The service is free for anyone over 70 – it is bulk billed with no gap.

If you have had a bone density scan within the last 12 months, you do not need another at this time.

Even if you are healthy, having a scan is advisable because osteoporosis has no visible symptoms and can impact anyone. It affects 1 in 2 women and 1 in 3 men. Find out more about osteoporosis at Osteoporosis Australia.

Why is it important to have a bone density scan?

Osteoporosis, or thinning of the bones, occurs when our bones lose minerals such as calcium faster than our bodies can replace them. This increases the risk of fractures after falls.

People with osteoporosis are more likely to break a bone should they fall, which can lead to ongoing health issues. If you find you are at risk, you and your GP can take steps to protect yourself further. You can read about falls prevention here.

Your appointment takes just 10 minutes.

The scanning service is provided by MeasureUp, who will bring a mobile laboratory to our Woolworths Carpark in Huonville. The lab carries a DEXA, a highly precise type of X-ray. The scan is totally painless and takes just 2 minutes. You keep your clothes on and there’s no need to fast.

Here are three easy steps to get your scan

1. Get your referral. We are conducting specific clinics for patients who require a referral – if you book into one of these clinics your appointment will be for 5 minutes only for the purposes of the referral. If you require time to discuss other issues, please book a standard 15 minute appointment to get your referral. Clinic days are:

  • Monday 13th May
  • Wednesday 15th May
  • Saturday 18th May
  • Monday 20th May
  • Wednesday 22nd May
  • Sat 25th May

2. Call MeasureUp between 9am and 6pm Monday – Friday on 1800 10 11 63 to book your 10 minute appointment. Have your referral and your Medicare card handy.

3. Please take your referral, Medicare Card, and any previous bone density scans with you to your scanning appointment.

We do hope you will be able to take advantage of this free healthcare service.
